OLO Smart Phone 3D Printer

Some great news for the 3D Printing and Customizers! Printing has now become more affordable without dropping tons of quality and $$$! OLO is a UV 3D Printer that uses your smartphone. They say that it can use just about any phone that has a digital screen. Supporting all the way up to an iPhone6S size.

UV has always been know to be one of the better quality methods of printing as SLS and ALS tends to leave tons of impurities. IT will be interesting to get this printer in hands to see if it delivers as they say it does.

It has two modes of printing one at “quick-mode” .12mm and a .036mm.

If you compare this to “um” which average SLS and ALS do 60um. This comes in around 36um’s! While this is slightly more than Shapeways Frosted Ultra Extreme… (Theres uses a 16micron layering) which is difficult to convert and comes around .016mm of detail…) So more than half!

Either way this printer starts at $99. The liquids sound like they will be VERY competitive and come in tons of colors. This may be what I use to start prototypes and then migrate to a 3rd Party printer like Shapeways/Sculpteo…

The space this allows for is rather small, but for Transformer parts… It should be plenty! My 5MM Hands, and future 5mm feet add-ons should print nicely in this. And at the rate of “testing” taking weeks, this will take hours…

OLO has been fully funded and is nearing the 1 million dollars of funding. (They needed $80,000!)

So go check it out!

How to make Energon Cubes

For a long time now I have been waiting to use my wonderful boxes that deliver plastic-crack-addictions… While this is still in the beginning phases of how to do this and how to do it well… The initial results are pretty nice! Not only is this a great way to recycle use of these boxes but they will help add to your displays!

So first things first… You need to save ALL your Transformer Boxes / Toy boxes that have “clear” packaging. Roughly 1 Deluxe box equals 1 energon cube. Each cube is about 2cm or 1 1/2 inch on each side. You can make these smaller, but I like this size as it scales nicely with Deluxes and Voyagers.

Unfortunately all I can say right now is I am working on perfecting this process. My plan is to have two methods.

1) Basic method that involves using a pattern and cutting the pattern out. Using then either tape or glue to shape the cube.

2) Advanced method using heat to melt the plastic to shape the cube. This method is much more difficult because if you melt the plastic to much it will rip, burn, and even set something on fire!

My goal is once I have this done I will even have some print outs such as patterns, and interior’s that you can place inside for different effects.

Leader class Megatron custom head

3DPrintron has a wonderful head sculpt that they have done that is now starting to show up all over the net.

Really the only thing this head requires is a slight amount of paint and your all set. Overall there is some significant improvements giving him a bit more of an IDW look tuff guy look.

Interested in getting it? Then go to Shapways and have it printed!

If you like the more “rustic” appeal use the lower quality ABS plastic, as it is cheaper, but also will give that more dirty look as LlamaGod’s depicts. If you want a more smooth finish then you will want to go with the Frosted Extreme Detailed.

CW OPTIMUS PRIME UPGRADE KIT – S.N.D. PRIMO VITALIS

Finally after months and months of waiting. A DECENT upgrade kit beyond what we can already get on Shapeways which is “ok” but requires tons of painting/sanding and filling to make it smooth like a normal toy. Least not forget trying to match up the paint colors…

This is from Bonnatron’s Tinkering and not related to the Beelzeboss’s version…

S.N.D. Primo Vitalis upgrade kit follows the look and feel of the current IDW comic book series. Even with this upgrades attached he is fully transformable, and is still able to combine with other  others!

He includes the following:

  • 1x Gun
  • 1x Sword
  • 1x Axe
  • 1x New Head
  • 1x Combiner Mode Head
  • 2x Shoulder Pads
  • 1x Chest
  • 1x New Waist
  • 2x Extended Thighs
  • 1x Pair of articulated hands.
  • 2x New Feet

The Chosen Prime says he should be ready by November, but with all these things it really is hard to say if it will be here… So hopefully definitely by Christmas!

Year of the Horse Optimus Prime Custom Paint

So a rather interestingly criticized MP-10 Optimus Prime is last years Year of the Horse Optimus Prime. I happened to buy him mostly because its rare to be able to buy ANY MP-10 for less than $150. Why you ask is he criticized? Well Gold paint… Transparent Trailer… Might as well have made him some gold chains to go around his neck and be 100% gangst!

Transformers Addicts Facebook group had a fan by the name Terry Binion share his changes to this figure and to be honest I think he looks better than the standard MP-10! In short all he did was painted all the gold parts “silver” and covered the autobot emblems with new stickers. The end result makes me want to take mine out of the box and paint over all that gold.

3D Printing Glass

So while this does not necessarily fit the normal MO… It however is really cool and the results once lit are absolutely beautiful!

An MIT group has developed a method of printing in glass. While the concept is much the same as blown glass, it can take a computerized nozzle and print all sorts of shapes. More than that the resulting products which typically fit vases, bowls, and so forth refract light in some amazing ways. It is however limited to layering, so getting highly detailed may not be as easy or possible. Glass also tends to be rather difficult because it “melts” and the shape may change slightly when cooling.

Engineer makes transforming car

It only has taken a single engineer ten years to create transforming remote control car. Still incredible work and definitely where the future is for Transformer toy-lines. Next I can see transforming vehicles that fight?

MP-10D Optimus Prime Custom

If your not following Skids Customs you need to be. While this site is relatively bias towards the Decepticons cause… We do however find room for Autobots especially ones like this!

Skids Customs was commissioned to take a MP-10 KO Ultra Magnus and convert him to a MP-10D Optimus Prime based on the Deceased Optimus Prime from Transformers the Movie (1986.) (The Cartoon also has him in a few episodes like this also.)

His goal was to make this Transformer look exactly like the cartoon with a cell shading effect. And let me say this is possibly the best custom paint job I have seen yet!

First here is a small interview:

– How long have you been customizing Transformers?

I have been customizing Transformers since 2013.

– When working with customers do you try to draft up on paper the vision or work directly on the figure?

When working with customers, they usually tell me what they want and I just go to work on the figure.

– What is your process when beginning a custom like this MP10 Optimus Prime?

I started with a fine tip sharpie marking areas where battle damage and cuts where going to be on the figure. First the head, cutting in the damage, sanding, cleaning and then painting. Then I moved on to each limb doing each one at a time and finally the torso. Each part was disassembled as much as possible before painting. No primer was used on this particular figure because the plastic already the color I needed it to be. Everything on this figure was painted by hand with a brush and finally clear coated with a brush also.

– What is your preferred brand of paints and type of paints?

I normally use Model Masters, Testors Enamels, Tamiya Acrylics and Vallejo Acrylics. This one was all Vallejo.

– Decepticon or Autobot? If you had to choose which side would you join?

Autobot all the way. I’m a huge Optimus Prime fan and have about 100-200 Optimus figures in my personal collection.

There you have it Skids Customs does commission custom work on Transformers and has a lot more on his Facebook page so go and check him out.

Commission Completed: I present to you…………… MP-10D Optimus Prime Dead Mode from Transformers The Movie. If you would like to see before and after pics, let me know in the comments!!! Enjoy!!!

PE 06 + 07 Devastator Addons

Perfect Effect has released additional photos of the up and coming PE 06  (Devastator hands, mix-master cab, new shovel for Scavenger, Hook extension for Hook, new heads including a Prowl head.) and PE 07 (guns and hands for individual figures…)

Overall the improvements here are VERY impressive. Making for an interesting option for those who went with Hasbro’s. I myself was able to get him for under $100 which makes for him to be just as awesome as the SDCC and Takara’s which will not offer as many unique changes to the figure.

PE has been a reliable source of 3rd Party Addons that have had excellent QC with no complaints that I am aware of. So this upgrade is one to not skip out on. Even those going with the SDCC or Takara may find parts to this upgrade that are a cannot miss.

Still no release date, but knowing PerfectEffect they are probably not far from an official date.
